Q: Why should Christians care about endangered species?
A: God loves all that He has made, even caring and providing for the small sparrow. He created and sustains the habitats which keep them alive and thriving, and continues to do so today.
Scriptures shows that God goes beyond providing for wildlife – He even acts to save them from extinction! When God sent the Flood in Genesis 6, He loved all the critters so much that He gave Noah the plans for the world’s first endangered species act – an ark! The Lord preserved all the threatened animals aboard Noah’s ark because He loved them.
As stewards of God’s earth, it’s up to us to follow God’s example and do what we can to protect and restore all of God’s amazing animals to the fruitfulness He intended for them. Simply put, extinction isn’t stewardship.
Q: Since humans are more important than animals, shouldn’t we take precedence?
A: We humans not only the thing that God cares about, and we’re not the only ones that care about God. After all, the entirety of creation sings praises to God! The psalmist wrote, “Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD all the earth … Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy; they will sing before the LORD”. What’s more, Jesus said that if we didn’t praise Him, the rocks would!
Humanity’s special relationship with God does not diminish that of the rest of creation. By allowing and abetting the extinction of wild species, we are permanently silencing their worshipful praise to the Lord. Being responsible worshippers of God means not silencing the non-human parts of His choir, but instead amplifying their voices to our common Creator.
Q: Isn’t the Endangered Species Act already enough?
A: The Endangered Species Act has since 1973 done incredible work to bring countless species from the brink of extinction, including the Bald Eagle. It continues to do so today.
But the Endangered Species Act is under persistent attack by politicians and developers. For years, there have been many attempts by some in Congress to gut and dismantle this critical safeguard of God’s creation. Worse, the current Administration has also variously refused to fund or enforce the Act.
The politicians and developers who are scheming to dismantle and diminish this historic Act must be reminded by Christians that extinction isn’t stewardship.
Q: What is Restoring Eden doing to protect endangered species?
A: We will continue to “speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves” (Proverbs 31:8) by sending a clear message to the politicians who vote with such opposition to endangered wildlife. We’re showing Christians how to live in ways which respect God’s most endangered creatures, and we’re organizing Christians all over America to tell legislators and politicians, “Extinction isn’t stewardship!”
Q: What can I do to help protect endangered species?
A: The most important thing we can all do is make our voice heard by our representatives in Congress, and by the current Administration. Soon, we’ll make it quick and easy for you to do this, and give meaningful lifestyle options which help protect “the least of these.” Until then, write to your Representatives here, your Senators here, and the President here.
